For my Honors Shakespeare project I watched four movies that closely resemble Shakespearean plays. They were She's the Man (Twelfth Night), The Lion King (Hamlet), West Side Story (Romeo and Juliet), and 10 Things I Hate about You (The Taming of the Shrew). I choose this project because I have noticed that basic Shakespearean set ups or stories are in all types of movies and I wanted to look further into how they relate. I remember writing previous essays this semester and not knowing if things that happened were clichés or if some of the clichés of storytelling come from the works of Shakespeare. The first thing I decided when writing the blog entries was that I did not simply want every entry to be a compare and contrast between the plays and the movies. It seemed repetitive, boring and basic. Rather, I tried to take everything a step further and ask questions beyond listing which plot points and characters match up. Without any further ado. Enjoy.
