One question I have asked myself many times throughout the semester is, Why read Shakespeare? Its hard and many of the references and jokes no one understands because they don’t exist in our culture today and yet most likely every single person to come out of an American high school will probably study at least one Shakespeare play before they graduate. What is it that made the work of this man so timeless and amazing that it is still so relevant today? I think it is because Shakespeare wrote with an incredible ability to tap into the way humans inherently behave and could translate that into a play. Reading Shakespeare reminds me of the connectedness of the human nature. I connect with a lot of Shakespeare characters despite the fact that I don’t have anything in common with their situations. Despite that fact however, I still wonder why we read Shakespeare instead of other books that are written in modern English? This semester and my project has taught me to appreciate Shakespeare is as an art. To see the writing as a piece of theater on the stage and a piece of poetry on the page. All I want to do is meet William Shakespeare and have a conversation with the man brilliant enough to make his plays so complex. I think of reading a No Fear Shakespeare or a simplified version of Shakespeare is like using Google Translate. It will get the job done and tell you all the most important parts, but the subtly will fall through. Some things cannot be translated and the Bard's work is one of those things.
