I believe that Shakespeare is accessible and relatable to teens because the characters in his plays are very impulsive and passionate. There are a lot of stereotypes about the way that teenagers behave and a lot of brain science that I don’t understand that supports it. Teenagers behave rashly, they jump in too deep, too fast and they want to defy any boxes society tries to put them in. This is similar to many of the characters in the plays I read for this project. Romeo, who actually is a teen, falls madly in love with a girl the same day he met her. Olivia goes from majorly depressed over the death of her father and brother to in love with Cesario to in love with Sebastian over a short period of time. Hamlet is depressed and suicidal. Bianca wants to finally come out from under her father's thumb and be her own person. All of these emotional journeys are very similar to things that teenagers feel. That is why movies adaptations of Shakespeare's plays also work so well, they connect so strongly with the teens they target.
